I think the main reasons why we are no longer encombered by flame wars is because we now have technology in place to delete the flames, and norms in place to log complaints against the flamers. Other than that, the majority has now gone through a decade of socialization, which leaves flaming something to be shunned.
Today's spam was yesterday's flame. Technology today is being redesigned to disrupt that spam (e.g. spam filters in blogs, no-follow in Google). It's not surprizing to see anti-spam extended to cell phones. *beep*... blah blah blah... *beep* *boop*... buzz buzz buzz buzz... *boop*
